Pincushions made at home

Cookie tools in the shape of hearts are used in this cool project.

Place the sharp end of a cookie cutter on top of a thin piece of Styrofoam (we used a grocery store produce tray for this step). This will make the base of each pin cushion. Press down on the cutter to make a mark on the Styrofoam. Next, cut out the heart shape.

Step 2: Cut a piece of fabric into a heart shape that is about half an inch bigger all the way around than the Styrofoam form. Place the fabric on a flat surface with the right side down. Use Aleene’s Tacky Glue to cover the back of the fabric. Next, press the Styrofoam against the fabric. Pull the extra fabric up around the edges of the Styrofoam and glue it down. Let it dry for 30 minutes.

The third step is to cut a piece of fabric that is at least three inches bigger all the way around than the cookie cutter. Place the cloth on your lap with the right side down and the sharp side facing up. To make the pincushion, push fiberfill stuffing into the cutter until the cloth sticks out about 3/4 of an inch past the cutter. Fold over the rest of the fabric and sew it in place with a running stitch to close the cushion.

Step 4: Put a thick layer of glue on the bottom of the cushion while it is still inside the cutter. Make sure the Styrofoam is pressed against the glue as you put it into the cutter. Hold it in place for three minutes. Put away for 30 minutes to dry.

To make it, shape a 10- to 12-inch piece of wire into the shape of a heart, wrap it in red twine, and set it away. Using oven-baked modeling clay, make a heart shape. Before baking, punch a hole in the top for hanging and write a phrase on it if you want to. Then, set the heart away.

Third, fourth, and fifth heart-shaped cookie shapes should all have holes punched in the crook and point. Cut the string into three pieces. String a big, medium, and small cookie cutter onto the string one length at a time. Make knots above and below each cutter to keep it in place. Do it again with the rest of the cookie shapes and twine. Making sure the hearts are facing the right way, wrap lengths of twine around the wire heart.

Gather the lengths of twine at the top and tie a knot to hang. Trim the ends of the pieces of twine that you knot at the bottom. Put a short piece of string through the ceramic heart and tie it to the bottom of the wine chime with a knot. Then hang it up.
